Spring has begun and that's fantastic news for the cannabis growers among us! good news for many cannabis lovers!  The start of the outdoor growing season has arrived and choosing the right genetics is of enormous importance! That is why we at 24High will help you choose the right and best cannabis seeds for outdoor cultivation in the Dutch and Northern European climate. First of all, we will start with one of the most important questions you should ask yourself before you start growing your own cannabis plants: do you want to grow a regular, a feminised or an autoflowering seed?

Regular cannabis seeds can produce both female and male plants. The male plants must then be separated, because they do not produce cannabis buds. You only keep the male plants if you want to make crossings and / or fertilize the female plants. Assuming you don't want this, you should separate them. We do not recommend the regular seeds for novice growers with little or no growing experience, but for the more experienced growers. Then we arrived at the "feminised" also called feminized cannabis seeds. These cannabis seeds produce female plants with 99.9% certainty. In very exceptional cases it can happen that a male or a hermaphroditic plant (the latter is both sexes) emerges from it. However, this rarely happens, so you can almost always assume that feminized seeds will produce female cannabis plants. We find these very suitable for novice growers.

The feminized cannabis seeds are available in both photoperiod and autoflower cannabis seeds. We would like to briefly discuss with you the difference between photoperiod plants and autoflowers, also known as auto-flowering plants. Two terms that you often hear when growing cannabis plants outdoors. Cannabis plants require 18 hours of light (sun / daytime) and 6 hours of darkness (moon / night) for the generative period, also known as the growing period. Photoperiod cannabis plants depend on the change in the number of light hours and hours of darkness from 6/18 to 12/12 (12 hours light / 12 hours darkness). So if you don't grow indoors, photoperiod cannabis plants are basically always seasonal. Depending on the genetics (type / strain), flowering often starts in July / August and the vast majority of outdoor cannabis growers harvest these plants sometime in September / October. The advantages of photoperiod cannabis plants are that there are generally more strains available and they are more forgiving in the event of breeding errors, and more mold resistant. More disadvantageous in particular is the space that a photoperiod cannabis plant needs and takes up and the slightlymore intensive care of it. If everything goes well with your photoperiod plants, you will often have a large (er) harvest.

Autoflower cannabis plants are plants that do not depend on the aforementioned switching of the number of light hours for their flowering, in contrast to the photoperiod plants. The autoflowers will therefore switch to their flowering phase regardless of the number of sun or light hours. This is because of their Ruderalis genetics, once developed by Mother Nature herself. So they are actually, simply put, auto-flowering cannabis plants. The autoflower cannabis plants are therefore generally faster to grow, remain (slightly) smaller, require less care (attention and time), but yield slightly less yield than a photoperiod plant. However, this can be compensated for by starting early cultivation and after the first cultivation, a new second outdoor cultivation round with autoflowers. It is certainly possible to realize two breeding rounds, there are even outdoor growers who have managed to save three breeding rounds in one outdoor growing season with the autoflowers! You can generally start growing cannabis outdoor seeds in April / May in the Netherlands (or in a similar climate). The moment when it stops freezing, also called ice saints, is often taken as the starting point.

A good tip for growers who cannot or do not want to wait until the weather is better and / or it is no longer freezing: start growing your photoperiod plants and / or autoflowers a little earlier indoors! Ideally, this can be done in a small grow room and / or with a grow light above it. However, it is certainly also possible to put your plants behind the window, provided there is enough sunlight. In this way you can gain a few weeks head start and with photoperiod plants it can yield just a little more harvest and with autoflowers it can make just a few weeks difference toto realize a second or even third breeding round later in the season. Another major advantage is that in the event of breeding errors, action can be taken in time and the cannabis plant can even be replaced in time and germination can take place again. You can also start growing a little earlier in an outdoor greenhouse, for example, but this is not possible for many due to lack of space in the garden (or budget). For those who do have a greenhouse, do this but make sure that the temperature in the greenhouse remains above freezing at all times, especially when it concerns seedlings or young plants.

We always recommend that you take a good look at the flowering time of the strain you want to grow outside before purchasing it. In general, you want to have a species in the Netherlands (or in a similar climate) that does not flower for too long. It is therefore wise to choose varieties that need 6 to a maximum of 9, exceptionally 10, weeks of flowering. You also want a variety that can withstand climatic fluctuations. In addition, it is also important that your chosen cannabis plant is reasonably to good fungus resistant. This depends, among other things, on genetics. Of course, the choice for a fungus-resistant cannabis strain is very important in our changeable climate with wet and cold late summers!

Of course it is also important to ask yourself what effect you want to experience if you eventually start smoking your own cultivated weed and therefore what kind of cannabis you want to grow. In the appearance of the plant and the effect of smoking it, a distinction can be made between the following types: Sativa, Indica, and / or Ruderalis. In the event that a cannabis strain is crossed, we speak of a Hybrid. The vast majority of cannabis strains today are hybrids. However, it often states whether it is an Indica or Sativa dominant strain. Ruderalis strains are nowadays the basis of all autoflowers (auto-bloomers), whether or not crossed with Indica and / or Sativa strains. Which strains could you start growing? Fortunately, we at 24High are happy to help you make your choice. Our team has extensive experience in growing cannabis, magic mushrooms and the like. Fortunately, we have already put together a top 5 of cannabis strains that are suitable for outdoor cultivation in Northern Europe and are available online in our Seedshop. Of course there are many more different types of cannabis seeds available in the Seedshop of 24High!

1. Hollands Hope by Dutch Passion

One of the first and classic Dutch "outdoor" strains, has been cultivated since 1980. A large cannabis plant with short internodes and very good yield. A heavy Indica effect with a powerful knock-out high. The Hollands Hope is quite mold resistant and a powerful and compact Indica that produces large buds and is suitable for changeable climates with wet and cold late summers. These cannabis seeds are therefore highly recommended by us for all outdoor cannabis growers in the Netherlands. The Hollands Hope has a flowering time of approximately 8 weeks. The plants grow to a height of 1.5-2.5 meters outdoors with long buds of about 40-50 cm. It can of course yield between 100 and 1000 grams depending on the growing conditions. The Hollands Hope gives off a fresh pungent aroma of lemon and pine when smoked. The taste is slightly tart and woody and also has a spicy undertone. This species is a real outdoor species but has also been cultivated indoors over the years with varying degrees of success. Especially a real outdoor species! Tip: grow her in the ground or in pots of at least 50 liters and you will be richly rewarded!

The most beautiful "open ground" variety that Dutch Passion has developed. The Frisian Dew is the crossing of a female Super Skunk with a male Purple Star. Although Dutch Passion in the has developed many Skunk / Purple hybrids in the past 20 years, we have never seen so much potential before! The Frisian Dew is light purple in color and 50% Indica, 50% Sativa. A particularly high yield and a favorable stem / leaf ratio are characteristic of this hybrid variety. She is not susceptible to mold and all in all a very full-performing open ground variety. She has a soft "Purple" aroma and provides a powerful high. In short, a stablele, strong plant and a must for the open ground grower, especially in the more northerly climates. This strain delivers mega yields under the right growing conditions. If you prefer to grow her in a pot, use a 50L pot, just like with the Hollands Hope, and preferably much larger. Then you will fill quite a few curing pots!

3. Northern Lights from Vision Seeds Northern Lights Automatic by Royal Queen Seeds

Northern Lights is one of the best-known cannabis strains in the world. It is largely an Indica variety that was bred in the US in the 1970s from Afghan genetics. The plant already came to the Netherlands in the 1980s. Soon after she entered the Dutch breeding scene, the Northern Lights became the standard strain for indoor cannabis cultivation. It conquered the whole world and thus became one of the basic strains of modern cannabis breeding. In recent years, various cultivation and breeding techniques have led to different Northern Lights cannabis varieties. All with the best features of this legend, but each with something extra unique. We sell Northern Lights cannabis seeds from two different and well-known seed suppliers. Although it is the same strain, the genetics of both are slightly different. That is why we also discuss them separately.

Northern Lights by Vision Seeds

The feminized Northern Lights cannabis seeds from Vision Seeds have been a favorite of many cannabis growers for years because of their easy growing characteristics and great narcotic values. We strongly recommend this strain for novice outdoor growers as it is one of the most forgiving strains out there. A high flower-to-leaf ratio, compact buds, good yields, exceptional resin production and a neutral taste followed by a strong sweet aftertaste when smoked are all hallmarks of this great cannabis strain! It is a typical Indica with a strong, but very relaxed effect for both body and mind. She can be grown both outdoors and indoors and in the garden as well as in pots!

The Northern Lights from Vision Seeds has these characteristics:

  • Flowering time: 9 weeks
  • Harvest time: (end) September / early October

Northern Lights Automatic Royal Queen Seeds

The Northern Lights Automatic from Royal Queen Seeds is a perfect mix of new and old. Northern Lights Automatic are both autoflowering (autoflowering) and feminised (feminised) cannabis seeds. It is a very versatile strain. Perfect for discreet indoor and outdoor growers. After a short growth period, also called the vegetative phase, the strain develops an abundance of cannabis buds. She goes through her entire grow and life cycle in just 9-10 weeks after planting the seeds.

The Northern Lights Automatic produces a generous yield to say the least and is perhaps one of the most yielding autoflowering strains out there. She grows to about 90-120 cm high. This makes her a rather large plant for an autoflowering variety, but her yield is also in proportion. She yields about 200 grams per cannabis plant outdoors and no less than 550 grams / m² when you grow her indoors! Like the original Northern Lights, the Northern Lights Automatic from Royal Queen Seeds has a pleasant, sweet taste and a comfortable, mainly physical effect that is often accompanied by a cerebral boost. This is the same classic varietyfrom RQS, but with an autoflowering touch. That also makes it an ideal plant for medicinal users.

  • Flowering time: 6 to 8 weeks
  • Harvest time: +/- 3 months after planting
  • Yield: above average (for an autoflower)

4. Quick One by Royal Queen Seeds

As the name suggests, the Quick One is an extremely fast-growing autoflowering variety. She was one of the first autoflowering varieties. At the time of its introduction, it was one of the fastest growing cannabis plants in the world. The Quick One is descended from Canadian genetics and is based on the original autoflowering strain Lowryder. She was bred by crossing Williams Wonder x Northern Lights with Ruderalis. The Ruderalis has given the plant its autoflowering properties. That means it will flower automatically without changing the light schedule. These genetics are at the cradle of almost all autoflowering cannabis strains out there today. Compact, fast-growing plant with an average yield! The Quick One cannabis seeds from RQS are all feminized seeds. After planting, they become strong female cannabis plants. These are ready for harvest after about 8 weeks! Some cannabis plants take 9 weeks to fully mature, but that's still pretty quick. Especially when you consider that most photoperiod cannabis alone takes 9 weeks to flower. The Quick One is a small, compact cannabis plant. It usually does not grow higher than 50-60 cm and is therefore very suitable for the balcony or to stay well out under the fence. If you take good care of her, she can yield up to 150 grams per plant and some growers have even managed to get more out of it. The plants have fresh, spicy and citrus-like aromas. The taste is mild, but pleasant and accompanied by a pleasant physical high.

The Quick One from Royal Queen Seeds has the following characteristics:

  • Harvest time: + / - 2.5 months after planting
